I want to go to that comedy festival in Dublin and to Eliza Clark’s book launch in Kirkby and see CMAT in October 🫡
“In the market for arts, the recognition of value has the nature of a social convention. [···] A challenge to economic theory in this respect is the fate of Rembrandt's celebrated "Man with Golden Helmet". The economic value of this picture used to be extremely high. The picture attracted large crowds and was the subject of much professional literature. It then became known that the "Man with Golden Helmet" was not a genuine Rembrandt after all. Immediately, the picture lost virtually all of its economic value, and the crowds dispersed. The artwork itself, however, had not changed one bit. What, then, had the crowds been seeing on the canvas that appeared to be no longer present after the bad news spread? If for some reason the very same picture would be reattributed to Rembrandt, its value would soar again, and the crowds would flock to the museum to adore this wonderful work of art.”
